I've found this site called 'How to Draw Pencil Portraits by Lou Pemberton' which I'm finding quite useful for the basics.
This is a lesson on drawing a 3D sphere and she does it in this very methodical way.
You use an egg cup or something to draw all the circles and just shade lighter and lighter as you go in.
