The First 10,000 Bad Drawings...

“We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us. The sooner we get them out the better.”

The internet seems undecided on who actually said these words. It was probably either Chuck Jones or Walt Stanchfield. They were both animators (cartoonists?).

Anyway, it seemed a fitting quote as Nic is always saying that you can be a genius at anything so long as you work on that thing for 10,000 hours to start with.

Once you remember that the last time you really drew anything was as a child, so it makes sense that the drawings you do today are still 'childish', then you realise that you can improve this.

It's a fun process as you can actually see your personal improvement. I think the key is to not take it seriously, not get mad when you can't do something yet and never give up.

When I get despondent about drawing I will refer myself back to my first post on this blog. I am fairly confident that most of the stuff I will be drawing from now on can only get better than this.

It is also comforting to think that even Picasso needed some help:

So here I am going to try to document the drawings I do from now till I become an artistic genius. I think it'll do me good to look back at what I was drawing a few months ago and see the improvement.

Also, when I am revered as an artistic genius this blog can serve as a history for all the art students.

I thank you, art students. Thank you for your dedication to the arts.
