Drawing Trees

Today I'm thinking about drawing trees. Not as interesting as drawing people, I thought at first. But... well, I am right, but trees aren't all that bad either.

The nice thing about trees is that whatever you do is ok. Trees look like shit sometimes in the wild.

There are a load of tree drawing instructional videos on You Tube. I used this one first:

Some tree drawing advice:

Draw out the structure first without any leaves
One side light the other dark
Shade the branches under other branches
Don't draw leaf by leaf
Don't make it perfect
Don't worry about the mess

Basic shape of the tree and branches. Have an idea of what the tree will look like in mind before you start.
I thought it mattered what the marks on the tree looked like, but it doesn't.
I just did crosses and f shapes and random marks and lines.

Then I added the shading. Again, much easier than expected. This is just scribbling over the tree. Stick to scribbling more on one side than the other (depending on where you want the sun to be).

There are also some vague leaf shapes here.

Then a bit more shading and highlighting branches and things and we are done. Ta-da!
