More Hands (and a small confidence crisis...)

Yesterday I was drawing hands. It was going well and I was enjoying it, so I thought I would continue with hands today.

Today, hands seem much more difficult and I am surprised. The difference is that yesterday I was copying pictures like this one:

Which some kind soul put on the internet. But today I learnt that cartoon-y  hands are NOT the same as real hands!

Today I took some photos of Nic's hands and edited them in Picassa so I could see the lines and shapes more clearly (and to make them look more interesting).

Then I tried to draw some of these hands.

It didn't go as well as I hoped, as realistic hands are much more difficult...

There are a few mini bits in the above drawings that give me hope. Although some digits are ridiculously out of proportion, there are a few bits that I think I can work on (like the top thumb in this second picture... near the 'Aghhh!').

I stopped drawing hands in order to document how this was going as the last hand I did looks like this:

Oh dear...

Proportions are very, very strange here. I need to stop thinking 'hand' and start thinking 'shapes'.

I still enjoy drawing hands. I like it when I draw something that looks basically like what it should do quite early on. Maybe that's the problem here though... It's not Right Brain enough. I'm being too logical.

Here's what I did yesterday, before I tried to follow realistic photos:
