The First Step - the mid-tones / the wash.
Basically this is shading the whole thing in a light-ish pencil. As we're drawing hair, the pencil goes from root to tip. I am finding this very difficult with long hair, I want to just draw from my wrist as at least this produces an even shape. I'll have to work on long hair. The above picture shows the pencil lines before I smudged them all in.
Step Two - Add the dark bits
Try to give some definition to the hair by adding the dark bits. I guess you just follow exactly where the dark shadows are in the picture you're copying. I failed at this bit.
Third Stage
Using the rubber to 'pull out' the highlights. I don't want to blame my tools, but I did use the wrong bit of a big school rubber (I've since bought a 'pencil eraser').
The whole thing was a little depressing really.
I tried a bit of hair without a person underneath it, but was similarly uninspired.

What the hell is this? |
Then... as I wanted to give up and only ever draw bald people from now on I tried with my
and I drew this little guy:
Admittedly, it is very small (you can see how small on that horrible picture of a lock of hair above) but it was the funnest thing I've done on hair so far.
I am now ready to begin exploring what the mechanical pencil can do for my hair!
